Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV)

The virus causes a serious disease on winter barley in Europe and northern Asia, the "barley yellow mosaic virus disease". See also the Barley mild mosaic virus for an alternative cause of that disease. Both viruses can occur together on the same plant. The disease is found in north-eastern Asia and has been reported from Europe since around 1980. Both viruses are transmitted through the roots by the soil-borne fungus Polymyxa graminis. The resting spores of the fungus can persist in the soil for many years. Yield losses of up to 50% (Europe) or even more than 50% (Asia) have been reported. BaYMV can also infect other cereals. See also Barley yellow mosaic virus 2 for a closely related virus species.
