Ascosphaera Olive & Spiltoir 1955
The fungi of this genus infect the larvae of beneficial Hymenoptera like honey bees causing chalkbrood diseases. They are ascomycete fungi belonging to the Eurotiomycetes. In the past, species identifications have been based on the size and shape of the ascomata, spore balls and conidia. However, taxonomic DNA analyses are today more reliable.
