Ascochyta fabae Speg. 1899

The fungus causes a common disease on broad bean and has a world-wide distribution. Infections occur especially under wet and cool conditions. Leaf necrosis and irregular dark spots develop on the pods. Conidia disperse through rain splashes. The fungus can also be transmitted by seeds. For management, resistant cultivars, crop rotation and the use of disease-free seeds is recommended.

Pycnia are dark brown in colour and distributed irregularly over the lesions. The conidia are straight or slightly curved, usually with one septum. They measure approximately 15-20 x 4-5 µm.
