Argas Latreille, 1795
This genus of soft ticks contains around 60 species. They are widely distributed and parasitise mainly birds, including fowl and pigeons. Some species are specialized on mammals and humans may be also occasionally attacked. Important veterinary species are the fowl tick, Argas persicus, and the Argas reflexus pigeon tick, A. reflexus.
The body of Argas species is flattened and the lateral margins are thin and include a stutural line between dorsal and ventral surfaces. The cuticle is leathery and covered with many small wrinkles.
