Antestiopsis thunbergii (Gmelin 1790) - (antestia bug, coffee stink bug)
This species of coffee bugs is found in eastern Africa and in parts of southern Africa. It is a serious pest of coffee in some areas, feeding on buds and shoots, developing berries and leaves. The feeding damage results in necroses and premature fruit fall. High infestations can lead to yield losses of more than 30%. In addition, the remaining berries have a poor quality and the roasted coffee has an unusual potato-like taste. This taste is possibly caused by certain microbes entering the berries through the feeding punctures (Bigirimana et al., 2018).
