Anopheles superpictus Grassi, 1899
This mosquito is found in central and south-western parts of Asia as well as in southern Europe. It can be common in some areas. An. superpictus bites humans and is regarded as vector for the malaria agent Plasmodium falciparum which can be important in some countries like Tajikistan (e.g. see Kondrashin et al., 2017 or Habirov et al., 2013). It also feeds on other mammals and birds.
An. superpictus breeds in clean, shallow, stagnant or slow-flowing water, including rice fields, irrigation channels, ditches and storage tanks. DNA analyses have suggested that it represents a complex of several closely related species.
