Anopheles franciscanus McCracken, 1904
This mosquito is found in southern and western parts of North America where it bites mainly larger mammals like rabbits, cattle or horses, but rarely humans. It breeds mainly in slow moving streams or shallow pools covered by green algae or in rice fields. A. franciscanus can be experimentally infected with Plasmodium vivax, but is not regarded as a significant malaria vector. Taxonomically, this species is closely related to Anopheles pseudopunctipennis and has been previously regarded as a subspecies of A. pseudopunctipennis.
