Anopheles flavirostris (Ludlow, 1914)
This mosquito is found in the Philippine islands, in Sabah (north-eastern Malaysia) and in Indonesia from eastern Kalimantan to Timor. It readily attacks humans during the night and also bites other larger mammals like water baffalos or cows. A. flavirostris is an important malaria vector in the Philippines and may also transmit the disease in Sabah as well as in some parts of Indonesia. In the Philippines, it may further transmit lymphatic filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti.
A. flavirostris is found mainly in hilly forest environments where it typically breeds in clear slow-moving and shaded fresh-water. It has been less often reported from wells or pools and only rarely from rice fields.
Taxonomically, A. flavirostris is related to Anopheles minimus and was previously regarded as a subspecies of A. minimus.
