Anopheles atropos Dyar & Knab, 1906
This mosquito is mainly found in south-eastern North America. It has been also reported along the Gulf coast, from Jamaica and Cuba, as well as further north along the east coast up to New Jersey. It readily bites humans during the day and breeds in the brackish water of salt-marshes, including areas with high salinity (up to 10%). A. atropos has been found to carry the West Nile virus (Hribar et al., 2003). It can be experimentally infected with the malaria agent but is not regarded as an important vector.
