Ammannia coccinea (weed) Rottb. - (purple ammannia)

This plant is semi-aquatic and a serious weed in water-seeded rice fields in some regions. It is native to the Americas, but has been introduced into various other regions like southern Europe or eastern Asia. The tiny seeds remain viable for many years and spread by floating on the water surface, or through human activities as contaminants of rice seeds.

The plants grow to a height of about 50 cm. The stems are often reddish and the leaves are elongated, up to 8 cm long. The small red flowers are formed in the leaf-axils on short stalks.
