Alternaria protenta E.G. Simmons 1986

This fungus is widely distributed and belongs to the large-spored Alternaria species. It infects a variety of crops. For example, it is a seedborne pathogen on sunflower (Wu & Wu, 2003). On potatoes and tomatoes it can cause early blight (e.g. see Ayad et al., 2017), a disease mainly caused by Alternaria solani. A. protenta and A. solani are closely related and can be only distinguished by their DNA structure.
