Alternaria (antagonists) Nees 1817

The genus is wide-spread and includes important plant pathogens. However, some forms and strains also have antagonistic properties against other fungi and have been studied as possible biological control agents of plant pathogens. This page deals with the latter group.

The species form dark coloured colonies on agar with brown, elliptical conidia often arranged in chains. The condidia are round on the side of the conidiophore and taper into a beak at the apical end. They contain vertical and often also longitudinal septa. The asci, if known, are usually cylindrical with 8 spores.
