Alphabaculovirus spexemptae (entomopathogen)
Assigned virus:
• Spodoptera exempta nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpexNPV)
The Spodoptera exempta nucleopolyhedrovirus is a pathogen of the African armyworm, Spodoptera exempta, and an important mortality factor in East Africa when pest populations reach a high density. This armyworm can become a serious pest of pastures and causes periodic outbreaks. In field trials, application of the virus has been able to control such outbreak, provided the virus is applied at an early stage, when larvae are in the I–III instar (Grzywacz et al., 2008).
