Alphabaculovirus aucalifonicae (entomopathogen)

Assigned viruses:
Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV)
Plutella xylostella multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (PlxyMNPV)

The 'Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus' is the type of the genus Alphabaculovirus. For a baculovirus it has an unusually wide host range, infecting more than 100 species of Lepidoptera. Members of the family Noctuidae are most sensitive to the virus.

The virus forms protein crystals (occlusion bodies) in the nuclei of the infected cells, each encloses several virions. Each virion contains several rod-shaped nucleocapsids. AcMNPV has a circular dsDNA genome of ~134 kb which encodes 151 ORFs, including 37 core genes which are shared by all viruses in the family Baculoviridae.

Several other viruses have been described which are regarded as being part of the same species. The 'Plutella xylostella multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus' (PlxyMNPV) has been officially recognized by the ICTV as a member of Alphabaculovirus aucalifonicae. In the following, several more are listed under synonyms.

Synonyms:
Anagrapha falcifera NPV
Galleria mellonella NPV
Spodoptera exempta multiple NPV
