Aedes togoi (Theobald, 1907) - (coastal rock pool mosquito)
The origin of this mosquito is uncertain. It is widely distributed in eastern Asia and has been recorded from North America since the mid 20th century. For research and a discussion on its origin see Peach & Matthews (2020). The adults bite humans, other mammals and birds. It is regarded as a vector of several diseases like Japanese encephalitis, Dirofilaria immitis, Brugia malayi (malayi filariasis), and Wuchereria bancrofti.
A. togoi is found mainly in coastal areas where it breeds in brackish water. However, it has been also recorded away from the coast in containers with fresh water near human settlements. It overwinters in the egg stage or the larval stage depending on the environmental conditions.
