Aedes sticticus (Meigen, 1835)
This is a floodwater mosquito in temperate areas of Europe, Asia and North America. It can be found up to far northern parts of these continents. After floods, it can emerge in large numbers, causing considerable stress to residents in the area. However, such outbreaks are not associated with any mosquito borne diseases.
The eggs of A. sticticus are laid on grounds which are frequently flooded. They are the overwintering stage and need conditioning by cold temperatures for their development. They hatch after flooding. The adult mosquitoes can fly up to 10 km and bite mainly during dusk. There is only one generation per year.
