Aedes sierrensis (Ludlow, 1905) - (western treehole mosquito)
This mosquito is found along the western coast of North America. It readily bites humans, but can also feed on other mammals. It can be a serious nuisance pest in recreational and wooded areas. A. sierrensis can transmit the canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). Under laboratory conditions, it can be also artificially infected with several other disease agents, like the West Nile virus. However, it does not transmit that virus readily in the laboratory.
A. sierrensis breeds mainly in tree holes, but has been also collected occasionally from artificial containers with ample organic matter.
