Aedes scapularis (Rondani, 1848)

This mosquito is found in Central and South America, in the north up to some southern areas of the U.S. It mainly lives in forests but it also occurs in urban areas. It enters dwellings and bites humans. Other mammals and birds are also hosts. It preferentially breeds in natural temporary pools but can be also found in permanent water bodies and in artificial containers.

A. scapularis has been shown to carry several human virus diseases and other disease agents which it probably can transmit. These include flaviviruses (yellow fever, Rocio, and Ilhéus viruses), an alphavirus (Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus), an orbivirus (Yunnan orbivirus) and filarial nematodes.
