Aedes mcintoshi Huang, 1985
This is a flood water mosquito, found in eastern and southern Africa. It is a primary vector of Rift Valley fever, a virus disease which affects humans, livestock, and some wild ungulates. The virus can be passed on transovarially to the next mosquito generation through the egg stage. It has been detected in diapausing mosquito eggs, and can apparently survive in this form during non-outbreak periods.
A. mcintoshi breeds mainly in shallow depressions (called dambos) that fill up with water during rainfall, but has been also collected from other water bodies like irrigation drainage canals. During dry periods the eggs can survive for several years, like in other Aedes species. Rainfall events therefore trigger mosquito outbreaks within a short period of time.
