Aedes dorsalis (Meigen, 1830)

This mosquito is widely distributed, especially in costal areas of temperate and subtropical regions. It bites humans and is an important pest in some locations. For breeding, Ae. dorsalis prefers brackish or salt water like tidal swamps. However it can also bred in fresh water.

Ae. dorsalis is regarded as a vector of the Western equine encephalitis virus and the West Nile Virus (e.g. see Reisen et al., 1998). Several other viruses have been isolated from this species.
