Aedes detritus (Haliday, 1833)
The species is a salt marsh mosquito and is found in coastal areas of Europe, including surrounding regions. It may also breeds in fresh water. It readily bites humans outdoors, apart from domestic animals, other mammals and birds. In some countries it is a serious nuisance species and populations can build up after spring flooding in areas where females have deposited large number of eggs the previous year. The eggs are the overwintering stage. Laboratory studies have suggested it to be a potential vector of the Japanese encephalitis virus as well as the West Nile virus (Blagrove et al., 2016).
