The effect of previous access to water on the responses of locusts to wet surfaces
Acrida 4, 1-8
Abstract: Normally fed nymphs of Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria are repelled when they come into contact with damp filter paper, but insects fed overnight on bran move on to the damp strip and often attempt to eat it. Branfed insects with access to water respond in the same way, as those fed on grass, suggesting that the reversal of response reflects the water content of the insects, although the reduction in water content following bran-feeding is small. The response is mediated by receptors on the antennae and possibly also on the tarsi.
