Alphabaculovirus wisignatae (entomopathogen)

Assigned virus:
Wiseana signata nucleopolyhedrovirus (WisiNPV)

The Wiseana signata nucleopolyhedrovirus infects a species of porina moths, Wiseana signata, in New Zealand. The genus Wiseana is endemic to New Zealand. The caterpillars of some species can become serious pasture pests, causing up to 20% damage on grasses. Several closely related viruses infect Wiseana species and are important for preventing and suppressing outbreaks of these pests. The natural transmission cycle of the moths can be interrupted by certain agricultural practices like hay production or cultivation, resulting in outbreaks of porina moths.

For a summary of the Wiseana nucleopolyhedrsis viruses see Kalmakoff and Crawford (1982).
