Streptomyces ipomoeae (Person & Martin) Waksman & Henrici 1940
The bacterium causes Streptomyces soil rot on sweet potato. Infected roots and tubers become necrotic and decay, resulting in stunting, chlorosis and eventually death of the plant. In storage, the tubers can also develop necrotic lesions, reducing their quality.
The disease develops in particular in soil with a pH above 6 and under dry and warm (> 25° C) conditions. It can be managed through the use of resistant cultivars.
