Rottboellia cochinchinensis (weed) (Lour.) W. Clayton - (itchgrass)
Itchgrass is an annual grass of Asian origin and now with a pantropical distribution. It is a serious weed in graminaceous crops. In particular, it affects rice and can reduce its yield by more than 50%. Additional crops affected are beans, cassava, cotton, maize, peanut, pineapple, sorghum and sugar cane. The stiff hairs on the sheaths and leaves cause skin irritation on humans and animals.
The plant produces a large number of seeds which can survive for up to 4 years and can emerge from soil depths of up to 8 cm.
