Oligonychus perseae Tuttle et al. - (Persea mite)
The mite is a pest of avocado in North America and southern Europe. It is native to central America and has been reported from the Mediterranean region since 2007. It builds dense silk nests on the underside of leaves, causing leaf necrosis and characteristic small, circular (ca 1-5 mm2) brown leaf spots.
Heavy infestations can result in defoliation and yield losses. About 20% losses have been associated with a density of 250 mites per leaf. The life cycle can be as short as 10 days during optimal conditions. The mites are green-yellow with dark spots and have an oval body with a length of 0.3 to 0.4 mm.
