Hymenachne amplexicaulis (weed) Rudge (Nees) - (West Indian marsh grass)
This grass is an aggressive weed in aquatic ecosystems which it has invaded various regions (e.g. Australia, parts of Asia and Florida). It is native to tropical and subtropical parts of Central and South America, where it is considered a useful forage species in some areas. In northern Australia it is regarded as a threat to wetlands, suppressing native vegetation and blocking waterways.
The plant can grow to a height of several metres. It has thick stems which float on water, as well as broad leaf blades. The seed-heads are typically 20-30 cm long with numerous flowers.
