Fimbristylis miliacea (weed) (L.) Vahl - (globe fringerush)

This sedge is a weed of rice, mainly in Asia and South America. It grows in wetlands and disrupts the rice harvests. It is also a host of several rice diseases like sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) or bacterial blight (Xanthomonas oryzae). It produces many seeds which spread through grazing animals. Control involves the use of herbicides. Keeping rice field flooded to a depth of 15 cm is recommended for suppressing this weed. The plants grow about ½ m high and have many spherical and reddish brown spikelets (2-4 mm long). The flower stems have 4-5 angles.
