Alphabaculovirus spexiguae (entomopathogen)

Assigned virus:
Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV)

The Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus infects the beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua). It has been isolated in various regions and is commercially produced in some countries (e.g. see Caballero et al., 2009). The virus is applied both in greenhouses as well as in open fields. It is highly pathogenic and fast acting in S. exigua. The assignment of the virus was based on the isolate US1. Another isolate (QD) has been assigned to a closely related species (Alphabaculovirus alterspexiguae).
