Anopheles subpictus Grassi, 1899

The mosquito is an important malaria vector in southern Asia and can be common in some areas of India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Four forms or sibling species have been described (named species A to D) which differ in their ecology, morphology and chromosome structure. Cattle is cited as the most common host, but species B appears to be highly attracted to humans. Species B is mainly found in coastal areas and can breed in brackish water, whereas the other forms mainly breed in fresh water.

A. subpictus is closely related to Anopheles indefinitus which had been previously classified as A. subpictus indefinitus.
