Ips pini (Say & T., 1826) - (pine engraver)

The bark beetle normally does not attack healthy trees and more often targets pine trees previously damaged by logging, windthrow, fire, lightning, ice or other causes. These damaged trees can then trigger infestations. Three "pheromone races" are known which differ in their aggregation pheromones (like in the response to -(-)- ipsdienol) and show also differences in their DNA structure as well as their geographic distribution..
