Parastagonospora avenae (A.B. Frank 1895) W. Quaedvlieg, G.J.M. Verkley & P.W. Crous 2013

This fungus is widely distributed and infects various grasses, including some cereals. It is similar in morphology and biology to Parastagonospora nodorum which causes 'Septoria nodorum blotch'. Both species cause elongated leaf lesions without distinct borders. However, P. avenae is common on oats and grasses like Lolium. The form Parastagonospora avenae f.sp. triticea has been also reported to infect barley, rye and wheat, but this form appears to be a different species (Quaedvlieg et al., 2013).
