Chionaspis pinifoliae (Fitch, 1856) - (pine needle scale)

This armored scale insect is found in North America, where is is a pest of pine trees and some other conifers (like Douglas fir and yew). It is is regarded as a quarantine risk to European countries (Marinova-Todorova et al., 2020). Outbreaks occur, for example, in Christmas tree plantations. The white colour of the scale's shield makes infested trees stand out. Heavy attacks can lead to needle drop and if they persist for several years even to death of the trees.

The insect is elongated and morphologically similar to Chionaspis heterophyllae. See Philpott et al. (2009) for separating both species.
