Spectral specific discrimination by Hylemya antiqua (Meigen) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) and other vegetable-infesting species
Environmental Entomology 12 (3), 650-655
Abstract: Manufactured cardboards of 13 chromatic or achromatic hues were used to study color attraction by Hylemya antiqua (Meigen), H. brassicae (Bouchd), H. platura (Meigen), and Thrips spp, in and around onion and cabbage fields. H. antiqua consistently responded in highest numbers to gray-, yellow- (two hues), white- and blue-colored cards in three experiments. H. platura responded to the same colors, with a marked preference for gray and a significant response to green in one of two experiments. H. brassicae was attracted to yellow (two hues), white, gray, blue, and buff, in that order. Thrips spp. consistently preferred the two yellows, blue, buff, and gray in four experiments conducted inside an onion field. It was concluded that yellow would be the most effective color with which to simultaneously monitor all the species studied.
