Delia antiqua (Meigen) - (onion fly)
This fly is a serious pest of onions and leeks and is found in temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It goes through 3-4 generations per year. Damage is usually most severe during the 1st generation when seedlings are attacked, wilt and die. During later generations the base of the stem and the bulbs are attacked, causing distortions and providing an entry point to diseases.
Female usually lay their eggs on the base of the onion plants and the larvae tunnel into the stem, shoot and bulb. The mature larvae move into the soil for pupation. One generation lasts around 2 months. Adult flies are 5-7 mm long and greyish.
