Psylliodes chrysocephala Linneaus, 1758 - (cabbage stem flea beetle)

This flea beetle feeds on the leaves and stems of Brassica species in Europe. It is often the first insect pest to infest winter oilseed rape and can destroy young rape seedlings. Other crops like turnip, mustard and cabbage are also attacked.

In winter oilseed rape, the adults emerge from summer diapause in the 2nd half of August and lay eggs in autumn in cracks in the soil close to the base of the plants. The egg-laying period can continue into the winter, depending on the weather. The hatching larvae tunnel into the young plants in the spring and cause considerable damage with their feeding activity.
