Aedes geniculatus (Olivier, 1791)
This mosquito is found in Europe and neighbouring regions. It bites primarily mammals including humans, but also birds and reptiles. In the laboratory, it can transmit the yellow fever virus as well as the filarial nematodes Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens (e.g. see Silaghi et al., 2017). A. geniculatus breeds in containers and tree holes. The eggs undergo diapause and may only hatch after 1-2 years. In northern areas the larvae are the overwintering stage.
