Acanthoscelides Schilsky, 1905 (weed bioagents)
This is a large genus of bruchids with around 300 species. They are native to the New World and feed on legume seeds. Often the species are host specific or feed on a few closely related legume species. While some are storage pests, other are considered beneficial because they attack weed species. Acanthoscelides macrophthalmus feeds on the seeds of Leucaena leucocephala, a leguminous tree which is often considered a serious invasive weed, but is also regarded as a useful plant in some regions.
The species are typically small and between 1 and 3 mm in length. They are characterized by the structure and texture of their vertex and frons, the protruding eyes and other features.
For storage pests of legumes see Acanthoscelides (pests).
