Culex univittatus (Theobald)
This mosquito is found mainly in the temperate highlands of eastern and southern Africa. It has been also recorded from the Near East and since around 1980 from southern Europe. However, some of these records apparently referred to the closely related Culex perexiguus. C. univittatus is a vector of several arboviruses of public health concern like the West Nile, Sindbis and Usutu viruses. It feeds mainly on birds, but can also bite humans. It breeds in natural clear fresh water accumulations.
