Culex perexiguus Theobald, 1903

This mosquito is found in semi-arid and arid areas of West, North and East Africa, across the Sudan savannah belt, the Mediterranean regions including southern Europe, the Near East, and south-western Asia up to India. It is mainly ornitophilic, but can also bite humans, domestic animals and other mammals. Several viruses have been identified from C. perexiguus, including human disease agents like the West Nile virus and the Sindbis virus. It breeds in fresh water accumulations, including containers, and can tolerate moderate pollution or salinity.
