Pissodes strobi (Peck) - (white pine weevil)

The weevil is a serious pest of young spruce trees in North America. Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) is particularly vulnerable. The adults feed on the upper stem sections and deposit their eggs there under the cortex. The larvae feed on the phloem as well as on the adjacent cambium, destroying the apical leader. The attacks cause deformation of the trees when a lateral branch becomes the new apical leader. This destroys the commercial value of the tree and can lead to tree mortality.
