Yponomeuta evonymella (Linnaeus, 1758) - (bird-cherry ermine moth)

This moth is found in Europe and temperate parts of Asia. Its main host is bird cherry (Prunus padus), where it can cause outbreaks leading to defoliation and reduced growth the following years (Leather, 1995). It can also infest other Prunus species like black cherry (P. serotina). The larvae are gregarious and feed in tent-like webs.

The wing span of the adult moth is around 20 mm. The forewings are silvery white with 5 rows of small black dots. The hindwings are greyish brown and broader and shorter than the forewings. The antennae reach about two thirds of the body length and are held close to the body when the moth is at rest.
