Violaceae (violet family) - Viola L. (pansies)

This family Violaceae contains around 800 species of herbs and shrubs. The genus Viola around 250 species of herbs. Field pansy, Viola arvensis, is an important weed in temperate regions of Europe and the Americas. It is often a problem in cereals and in field crops like canola or potatoes. The family and genus have mainly simple, alternate leaves with stipules at their bases. The flowers are asymmetrical and have 5 petals, 5 sepals, as well as 5 stamens.
