Vespa orientalis Linnaeus, 1771 - (oriental hornet)
This hornet is found in southern Europe, North Africa, the Near East as well as southern parts of western Asia up to parts of south-eastern Asia. It can be a health hazard, destroys honeybee hives and is a pest of fruits in some areas. It builds large nests underground, in hollow tree trunks or in buildings. Workers have a length of about 25 mm.
