Venturia nashicola S. Tanaka & S. Yamam. 1964 - (Japanese pear scab fungus)
The fungus causes a serious disease of Japanese and Chinese pears in eastern Asia. These include the species Pyrus pyrifolia, P. ussuriensis, P. betulaefoila, and P. bretschneidieri. Conidia landing on the leaves or fruits germinate and penetrate the epidermis using penetration pegs that do not rely on natural openings. A thick mycelium develops which spreads horizontally under the skin. V. nashicola is closely related to Venturia pyrina which is common in Europe and North America, but can be also found in other regions. V. pyrina infects mainly the European pear, Pyrus communis.
