Vairimorpha apis (Zander, 1909)
The pathogen causes a widespread disease of adult honey bees and infects the cells of the mid gut. Spores produced by infected bees are discharged through the gut which becomes evident through the "fecal streaking" of the bees (see illustration on the right). Although there are no other obvious external symptoms, the infections reduce honey production and weaken colonies. The microsporidium is closely related to the more common Vairimorpha ceranae, but causes more pronounced "fecal streaking".
