[An investigation on the possibilities of biological control of Aleurothrixus floccosus (M.) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), which is harmful on the citrus orchards in the Aegean Region, by utilizing Coles noacki H. (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae)]
Turkish Journal of Entomology 31 (3), 203-213
Abstract: Aleurothrixus floccosus (M.) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) causes damages by sucking phloem sap and excreting honeydew on leaves in citrus-growing areas. The pest has tended to become prevalent in the Aegean Region since 1999. Cales noacki H. (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), which is the most effective beneficial against the pest, has been utilized successfully in many countries. The parasitoid was determined in the Aegean Region within some initial field observations. However, its population density did not reach to the level which would take the pest under pressure. If biological control of A. floccosus is not supported by parasitoid releases, the fact that intensive chemical applications against the pest would destroy the natural balance in favor of other pests has been taken into consideration in the study between 2002 and 2003.
Mass rearing and augmentative releasing of C. noacki have been performed in the course of this study. Population fluctuations of the pest and the parasitoid have been observed.
