Trypodendron betulae Swaine, 1911 - (birch ambrosia beetle)

This ambrosia beetle is found in north-western North America, where it infests birch and alder trees. Male and female pairs construct galleries into the sapwood. Egg niches are constructed in the lateral tunnels after the symbiotic fungus has become established in the galleries. Development of the larvae lasts throughout the summer and the young emerging adults overwinter in the leaf litter. New attacks are then initiated during the coming spring.
