Trombidiidae (predators/parasites) - (red velvet mites)

The species of this mite family are active predators as grown adults but often parasitic as early instars. They are sometimes called "Red velvet mites", although this name is also used for mites from other families. The family includes around 300 species and several of them are considered to be natural enemies of pest insects and mites. For example Allothrombium pulvinum preys on spider mites and is also an ectoparasite of aphids.
