Tipulidae - (crane flies)

This family contains around 4000 species of flies with long legs and elongated frons. The adults feed on flowers, the larvae are aquatic or live in moist soil and in some species they damage the roots of grasses and crops, see for example the genus Tipula for important pest species.

In general, the adults resemble large mosquitoes with an elongated body. The two wings are often held at rest partly spread out. The colouration is mostly brown or gray and the wings are often spotted.

For details see the respective page in Wikipedia.
